Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program: Keeping Loved Ones Together
We believe family is the foundation of a fulfilling life. The Family Sponsorship Program enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close relatives for permanent residence, ensuring they can build a future together in Canada.
Who You Can Sponsor Under Family Sponsorship
Spouses and Partners: Includes a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner.
Dependent Children: Biological or adopted children under 22 years old, who are unmarried or not in a common-law relationship.
Other Relatives:
1. In rare cases, you can sponsor orphaned relatives, such as:
2. Orphaned brothers or sisters.
3. Orphaned nephews, nieces, or grandchildren.
Relatives with No Other Sponsor Options: If you have no other close relatives in Canada, you may sponsor certain family members, such as an aunt or uncle, provided they meet specific criteria.
Who Can’t Be Sponsored?
Certain relatives cannot be sponsored under this program. Additionally, your eligibility to sponsor may be impacted if you:
Have unpaid alimony or child support obligations.
Declared bankruptcy and have not been discharged.
Received social assistance for non-disability reasons.
Failed to repay immigration loans or comply with previous sponsorship agreements.
Have been convicted of a violent crime, sexual offence, or crime against a relative (unless a record suspension has been granted).
Sponsorship Process and Responsibilities
- Application Process
Submit both the sponsorship application and the permanent residence application.
Include documentation proving the relationship and financial capability.
- Agreement to Self-Support
The sponsored individual must sign an agreement stating they will make efforts to support themselves (children under 19 are exempt).
- Undertaking Commitment:
Financially support the sponsored family member for:
3 years for spouses and partners.
10 years or until dependent children turn 25, whichever comes first.
Benefits of Family Sponsorship
